Dentures Q&A

Are dentures the same as dental implants?

Dentures and dental implants both replace missing teeth, but they aren’t the same:

Dentures

Dentures are oral prosthetics that rest on your gums or attach to dental implants. They replace some or all of your teeth, restoring your smile and ensuring good oral health.

Dental implants

Dental implants are metal posts inserted into your empty tooth sockets. They integrate with your jawbone after placement and provide a base for crowns, fixed bridges, or implant dentures.

Who should consider getting dentures?

Consider getting dentures if you’ve lost some or all of your natural teeth due to:

  • Extractions
  • Gum disease
  • Oral trauma
  • A medical procedure, like chemotherapy

Failing to replace your teeth with a prosthetic affects the health and integrity of your gums and jaw bones. Restorative procedures, like dentures, preserve these tissues, reducing your risk of more severe complications.

Are there different types of dentures?

The Custom Dentures team offers several types of dentures, including:

Custom dentures

Custom dentures replace an entire row of teeth in your upper or lower jaw. They have pink gums made of plastic or acrylic and a full arch of artificial teeth. Custom dentures are removable and rest on your gums. You soak them in a denture solution at night.

Partial dentures

Partial dentures replace two or more of your teeth. They have a metal frame, similar to an orthodontic retainer. The frame connects to plastic or acrylic gums and several false teeth. Partials are held in place with small metal clasps that are bonded to your remaining teeth.

Implant dentures

Implant dentures are removable prosthetics that attach to dental implants. The implants fuse with your bone after placement, providing a secure anchor for your dentures.

Flippers

Flippers are removable dentures that replace between 1-6 teeth. These dentures slide into place against the roof of your mouth or rest on your lower jaw. Flippers are typically cheaper than partial dentures but provide similarly stunning results.

Fixed Bridges

Fixed bridges, or All-on-4® dental implants, support a full row of artificial teeth with just four titanium posts. These implants replace your natural tooth roots, ensuring your new teeth stay in the proper position.

Same-day dentures

Same-day dentures allow you to receive partial or complete dentures during a single visit. For example, if you need denture extractions, the Custom Dentures team might use same-day dentures to restore your biting and chewing. These dentures give your mouth time to heal while the team creates a personalized set of full or partial dentures.
